Approved drug - In the United States, the FDA approves prescription drugs. Before a drug can be prescribed, it must undergo an extensive FDA approval process.
Clozapine - Clozapine (trade names Clozaril®; Leponex®; Fazaclo®), approved by the FDA in 1989, was the first of the atypical antipsychotics. Clozapine is the only FDA-approved medication indicated for treatment-resistant schizophrenia and for reducing the risk of suicidal behaviour in patients with schizophrenia.
Ziprasidone - Ziprasidone (Geodon®) was the fifth atypical antipsychotic to gain FDA approval. Ziprasidone is FDA approved for the treatment of schizophrenia, and the intramuscular injection form of ziprasidone is approved for acute agitation in schizophrenic patients.
Olanzapine - Olanzapine (Zyprexa®, Zydis®, or in a combination with fluoxetine as Symbyax®) was the second atypical antipsychotic to gain FDA approval and has become one of the most commonly used atypical antipsychotics. Olanzapine has been FDA approved for the treatment of schizophrenia, acute mania in bipolar disorder, agitation associated with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and as maintenance treatment in bipolar disorder.
